Lunchtime

Today was the coldest day of winter yet but these boys managed to find a bit of sunshine at lunch time today and sat outside making the most of it for almost all of their break! One even needed his sunnies to wear.

Maths activities

One of the groups worked hard during Maths today and created a grand building they were very proud of!

Group work

Room 18 and I love the new classroom and the odd circular shaped table we have! It works well with taking groups of students for reading, writing and maths :)

Unveiling of Poppy Artwork

This morning was an early start to the day but it was well worth it! Many of Arahoe students, parents, whanau and parents gathered at 7am to celebrate the unveiling of the artwork many of us had been working on in term 2. It was wonderful to have a chance to hear why we had come together to see why Poppy's were such an important symbol for WW1.

Safety in and out of school

For topic this term we are learning about safety around roads, looking out for hazards and how to be safe while going in and out of the school gates. Today we all found a partner to hold hands with for extra safety and went to explore one of the school entry points. We found a safe place to stop and look around outselves to see what would be unsafe and what we could do to make sure we were safe. We decided that it would be safe to stop, look and listen to any cars coming, hold hands with a parent and also use the footpath up above on the hill if we needed to walk in and out of the gate.

Geometry

Today during maths we learnt all about 2D shapes as a part of the Geometry strand focus this term. After learning about these Room 18 were given an activity to choose shapes of their choice to make a person.

Te Reo

Today during Te Reo we learnt how to ask each other where something is saying 'Kei hea te.....?' We also learnt what 'inside' and 'outside is in Maori and played a game where they had to run in and out of the circle depending on whether I said Roto or Waho.

Writing

Writing lesson:

Group 1: these children put Casey shapes together to create a letter. This photo shoes a tall stick and a close the gate shape being put together to make b.

Group 2: these children thought about something they like that they had to paint. After painting they had to make a sentence for it which was then cut into separate words for them to jigsaw together! This really helps them to figure out what word comes next, what the word starts with and what sounds and letters they are looking for.

Notice board

Hi Parents,

Here is the parent notice board which will be on display in the classroom from each day on. This is where all important notices and updates will be if you ever need to have a look or be reminded of anything coming up! Hope you find it helpful.

Hangi

How exciting! We all got to see the hangi being lifted and the food taken out. Some children in our class were given very big meals to eat! Don't think any of them finished them! They looked very tasty though.

Matariki Parade

Room 18 loved parading their starry night sky and the cloak we made with the Ara Teina Syndicate for Matariki!

Rewena - Maori Bread

Today we made Rewena (Maori Bread) in class and ate it with some yummy strawberry Jam! We had two left over and decided to go give them to Mrs Hopede (Deputy principal) and Mr Limbrick (Principal) which they absolutely loved! We even decided to reuse our paper towels by ripping them all up for the tiger worms to eat!
