Traditional Maori Korowai Cloak

Room 18 are making a traditional Maori cloak this week also known as a Korowai! We are colouring in feathers based around the colours of our native birds in New Zealand such as the Kakapo, Kiwi and Kea. Keep and eye on the blog or in class to see the end result in the next few days :)

Word of the week

Today we practiced using the word of the week 'said' and using a speech bubble and speech marks to say what someone said.

Ara Teina Certificate

Well done to one of the boys in our clas for receiving the Ara Teina Certificate last week. He has been working very hard on learning his letters and sounds!

Making worm farms outside of school!

Some families in room 18 have decided to make their own worm farm at home with their family! This is so exciting and great to see. Feel free to send in any pictures of this and I will continue to show these on the blog. It's wonderful to know that many families have taken on the option of having another way to dispose of their waste at home. The right food is being given to these worms as well as protective gloves being used!

Making worm farms part 3

This afternoon some parents came in to make a worm farm with their child. I had two boys be the "teacher" and explain how to make a worm farm - from drilling holes into the container adding news paper and paper dirt and then tiger worms. The two boys loved sharing their knowledge with the parents and there are also more photos of children making worm farms at home.An email will be sent out shortly with how to keep your worm farm up and running.

Scgraffito

Room 18 are doing some fancy artwork this week called 'scgraffito'. This is when they colour in a piece of paper uaing bright and bold crayons, paint over it in black then scratch out a picture to show the show the colours underneath. One of the parents brought in 30 leaves to have a look at which show many different colours so I thought this would be perfect to use for our art. The children will be drawing and scratching out the shape of the leaves. Watch the blog to see updates on this!

Making our own worm farms

Mrs Turner has been very busy in class this week making worm farms with some of our children in room 18!

Practice lockdown

Room 18 were wondering why on earth the bell kept going on and off for a couple of minutes! This is called lockdown which is when someone or something outside the classroom could be harmful to the children so we lock all the doors and get them to all come together and hide! THANKFULLY this was ONLY a practice drill so the children can learn exactly what to do incase this really happened and was the real deal. Poor room 18 had to squeeze themselves into the tiny office in our classroom! We all did a pretty good job at doing this though.
